GPのファンになったのが、ケニー・ロバーツ氏とフレディ・スペンサー氏の争いとなった1983年、高校2年の時か。それ以前は2輪のレースなどまったく興味がなかった。
フィル・リード氏の名を知ったのは、ロバーツ氏やエディ・ローソン氏が所属していたヤマハチームのディレクターをしていたジャコモ・アゴスチーニ氏の現役時代の事を知るにつけ、という感じ。当時でひどく大昔の事のように思えたが、
いやちょっと待て。ケニー＆フレディ、その前がマルコ・ルッキネリ氏やフランコ・ウンティーニ氏、バリー・シーン氏、で、その前ぐらいになるのだから、大きな入れ替わりにして３つ前、時間的には１０数年弱。今で考えれば、クアンタルロ君、バニャイヤ君の今、その前マルク・マルケス氏、その前ホルヘ・ロレンツォ氏、で、ヴァレンティノ・ロッシ氏とケーシー・スト―ナー氏の時代か。現時点からすれば、ロッシ氏、ストーナー氏の時代にあてはまる、時間的にもそんなものかもしれない。時間は経っているが、大昔と言ってしまうのもためらわれる、そんな感じか。
下位クラスも含めても、GPで７回チャンプになってるのであれば、当然レジェンドである。歳は大体ウチの父と同じくらい。人類史上死ななかった人間は一人としていないのだから、お年を召していたことも考えれば、予定稿的な部分はあるのかもしれない。
嫌なこと、矛盾もいっぱいあったかもしれないが、しかし、1960年代、70年代、上を向いていられた時代だ。その頃を夥しいエネルギーを湛えて走っていたフィル・リード氏だ。
GP自体、今のmotoGPのようなツルンとスマートな”コンテンツ”ではなく、ちょっと胡散臭い所もある”興行”である部分もあったのかもしれない。時代の空気そのものが熱量夥しく、そういうところに憧れを感じているのかもしれない。

1982年というと、まだオレが2輪のレースに興味を抱く前の話で、翌年になればケニーとフレディの名勝負、そこに割って入る片山、と、情報が極めて少ないなりにもリアルタイムで2輪のレースとか知るようになるが、まぁ、当時の田舎の高校の常として、単車は禁止だったので、なかなか興味は抱きづらい。一応は同世代を大きく二つに分ければ優等生側の方にいたみたいだし。
1982年に高校に入学している。なんか、この地方では一番の進学校という事らしい、などと書くとわざとらしいな。が、ま、そういう事だった。入学前、教科書を学校説明会の帰り、学校の前の学海堂という本屋で買わされる。その中に岩波新書、丸山真男著「日本の思想」があった。今みたいなツルツルの少し厚めの丈夫な紙のカバーではない、セロファン紙のような半透明のカバーがついていたころの。授業が始まる前までに、これ読んどけ、って？ いや、無茶でしょ、この前まで中学生だったお子様たちには。この時期、従兄が結婚式を鯖江で挙げて旅行がてら鯖江にいったのだが、そこにも持って行って何とか読もうとしたが、最初の見開きから先に進めない。意味わかんないんだもん。

新書という以上、出版された時代性と切り離して考えるべきではないが、しかしまぁ、今になって思えば古典的名著ではあるようにも思う。
今は、その方面の本も結構出ている。需要はあるのだ。それだけは、この本の初出の1960年ごととは様相が違っているように思う。
オレ自身の事を言えば、この方面の本に手を伸ばすのは浅田彰「逃走論」以降の話なんだが、それにしても、だ、丸山氏が指摘するように、この国、日本の思想を語ろうとすると、どうしても、戦時あたりのこと、今でいうパワハラ的な日本精神論の方に行ってしまう感じがして、その当時は忌避していた、正直な話。切実にオレが当時欲していた思想はそういうものではなかった。
